The New Zealand Skilled Migrant points system is designed to allow Expressions of Interest to be ranked in order so that the New Zealand Immigration authorities can make invitations to apply for residence to those migrants who can offer the most in economic growth and other factors to New Zealand. This visa isn’t designed for people who are self-employed. If you want to work in your own business, you may wish to apply for an Entrepreneur Resident Visa instead.
Points are awarded for age, having family members in New Zealand, applicant’s employment, previous work experience, and qualifications. You will need to meet the minimum threshold of 100 points to be able to lodge an Expression of Interest. But currently, they are only selecting EOIs with 160 points or above.

After the proper assessment and calculation of points one must have to submit an Expression of Interest.
To submit an Expression Of Interest there are two options

Submit an EOI online
After this If you have 160 points or more you'll be selected from the EOI pool and may be sent an ITA and this is the stage where applicant receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Then submit a resident application and if its successful applicant will be issued a resident visa.
